On the spate of what was perceived as an alarming surge of foreigners in UK, the British Prime Minister with the home secretary announced a move to reduce the number of immigrants and as well to create better working conditions for skilled labourers in UK.
This was announced on 4th December, 2023 and later on an extended part of the new rules was added on the 21st December.
From last findings, the immigration rules has come into enforcement with immediate effect with some of the rules set to be fully enforced by April 2024.
As an international students in UK, you will no longer be allowed to bring dependents as it was earlier obtainable and this took effects by January 1, 2024.
What does the changes spell out?
Most of the immigration rules adjustment was centered on reduction in the number of dependents who constantly troop into the country enmass and to increase the net earnings of skilled workers in the country.
Five of the major rules are stated below:
- Prohibition of students and social workers from bringing in dependents.
- The minimum salary of sponsored skilled workers was increased from £26,200 to £38,700. However, this was not for teachers and healthcare workers.
- Number of jobs in the occupation shortage list was reduced; these will obviously reduce the number of sponsored jobs thereby, reducing the immigration rate.
- Overseas students who graduate from any of the British Universities can be awarded a 2year graduate visa after a review by an immigration Agency.
- To sponsor someone say a partner, a minimum amount of money required was increased from £18,600 to £38,700
